GEO Special would like to portray the northern German city in a new and yet unseen light. And to introduce the new Hamburg, taking shape in Hafencity with the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, along the Reeperbahn, in the city’s harbour and, in particular, in the south of Hamburg, in Wilhelmsburg, where the International Garden Show and the International Building Exhibition are expected to attract millions of visitors. Indeed, the city on the river is a city in flux. And for this reason, we have focused on the fundamental changes currently occurring in Hamburg – with in-depth reportages and with extensive travel service sections. Please excuse the editorial team if too much local pride occasionally shines through: the editors and authors know Hamburg like the back of their hand, the city is their ‘home port’.

This digital edition of GEO Special offers the entire contents as included in the English print edition as well as additional pictures, various subtitled videos and audio features, animated maps and a spate of travel tips. What the new landmark, the Elbphilharmonie, will look like inside, which airborne perspectives a flying camera captured, how catching the laughter of Hamburg’s most well-known taxi drivers is – you can experience all of this with this new edition of GEO Special.

A touch of your fingertip and you can hear what Hamburg sounds like on the Reeperbahn or in the harbour, you can accompany GEO authors and photographers, you can conveniently have all large features of the app read to you in English. Also, the preparations for your journey will be made easier for you: you’re looking for a hotel, a restaurant, a bar in Hamburg? No problem with the app’s interactive offline maps. Links to online maps provide additional assistance in finding your location plus the shortest route to your destination. And, of course, we have included a spectacular 360-degree-panorama of the city.

To download this digital edition of GEO Special, your iPad should be connected via Wi-Fi. The app itself is relatively small but, having started the app for the first time, it will take a one-off period of up to ten minutes to download the contents (250 MB for iPad 1, 2 and mini, 400 MB for iPads with retina display) due to the usual visual strength of GEO and several additional features. Subsequently, you can also use all articles and most additional features without internet connection, enabling to read, touch, see and hear GEO Special wherever you want to – including in your car, on trains or airplanes. Only the playing of videos requires a Wi-Fi connection or a very good 3G connection. And, of course, internet access is also necessary to open the various web links.
